Well, by now just about everyone has heard the story, but for all five of you that haven't (Hi mom!), at a Mid-Ohio Con, comic artist Taki Soma was alleged groped in a hot tub by Comic Book Legal Defense Fund executive director Charles Brownstein, who was heretofore considered to be "good people." In a complete shock to everyone who have never watched an episode of Law & Order: SVU, accounts differed between the victim and the perpetrator (if only there was some kind of term for this kind of "he said, she said" situation!).
As for me, I'm just wondering if there isn't some happy middleground between feminist witchhunt and "bitch had it coming." If he's guilty, I hope he has to pay an appropriate fine or serve a jail term (although some people's suggestions involving power tools and the then-unnamed offender's genitals strike me as cruel and unusual punishment). If he's innocent, I hope he's exonerated. Either way, Brownstein should be treated as an individual (and yes, part of that IS innocent until proven guilty) and not as a scapegoat for industry misogyny. Unfortunately, this will probably never have a satisfactory conclusion for anyone. Even if it does go to trial, even if it does go to CRIMINAL trial, I doubt he's going to break down on the stand and confess to everything (episodes of Matlock to the contrary).
In a burst of irony, heykidzcomix put up a thread to criticize the "boys' club" defending Brownstein ("Every man, his own Bill Napoli.") in which one person charmingly opined that "You know, the world would be a much happier place if men, all as a group, would just go out and throw themselves dick-first into wood chippers." Which, one, I imagine the men wouldn't be happier, and second, unless the movies are right about all women being situational lesbians, I imagine they wouldn't be too happy either. Since when does being against misogyny means you have to be against men as a gender? |

I have spent SO MUCH goddamn time tr to explain to other people that feminist != hatin' on menfolk. Men are not our enemy, ladies. The patriarchy (if you wil, for lack of a better term) is the enemy, and there's a fucking difference
*bitter bitter fume fume*
I'd just like to point out that the person that said that IS a guy. I love men. Colbert! Colbert is men. Men, men, men. Manchildren, though, not so much.
Ahh, one of those self-hating men. That's almost as bad as being a woman! I bet he doesn't care for monster trucks OR wrasslin'!
You brave little toaster, you. Just threw yourself into the maelstrom; and right after that Simpsons episode this Sunday.
Eh, it's really hard to be clear about this stuff in these situations, unless you use about a thousand qualifiers. I don't doubt you know that most feminists understand the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing and don't want to hack off men's genitals, but it's worth putting out there, anyway.
Some feminists don't understand the value of evidence over accusations, and DO hate men. They would be the stupid feminists. We all wish they'd write checks more and open their mouths less, but what can you do? God, those people make me wince. All I can think is when I see them, or hear from them is "Shut UP, you're making us ALL look bad." Wait for a freaking verdict, people.
Looking back on this message, I meant to emphasize the second point, rather than the first. I agree with what you're saying about waiting for evidence. And how this is one incident, rather than an example of industry-misogyny. Unless there's been a rash of comicon molestation that I haven't heard about. Which could be, considering I hadn't heard about this. I must live close to your mother.
You're right. No one will be happy, no matter how it turns out. Too many of these damn situations are all "he thought, she thought" mistakes, where one thought things were going one way and the other did not. All I know, It's easier to just ignore the effing news.
