Smart person talks about the Mary-Jane statue, film at eleven. In other news, Mr. Fantastic sighting causes major traffic delays due to rubbernecking.

Choice quote: Likewise, one could argue that erotic depictions of teenagers for the edification of adults is a morally dubious venture.

Koff koff koff!~ Ahem, excuse me, I seem to have gone into a coughing fit. Would someone fetch me a glass of ice-water? (And figure out what innate moral superiority a fandom has to object to sexualization when most of its major 'ships involve one or more underage teenagers. Pot to kettle: Stop drawing Supergirl's skirt so short!)

Also, there's a picture of gay cowboys, for those of you interested in that sort of thing.

"Pot to kettle: Stop drawing Supergirl's skirt so short!"

To be honest, I don't have any moral objections to her skirt being so short, it's more a matter of aesthetics. I mean, it's the most pointless piece of clothing ever. It hides nothing! Why not just fight entirely naked? ( Maybe with a super-bra for support. )

"Also, there's a picture of gay cowboys, for those of you interested in that sort of thing."

They need more body hair and less George Clooney.

[from the quote in the article]
"She’s bending over to make every orifice sexually available to the viewer."

What...? Okay, this is coming from someone who has little experience in this matter, but I think "women don't work that way" is in order.

"In addition, she’s doing a menial and unnecessary domestic task..."

Unnecessary? Are we led to believe neither Peter nor Mary-Jane ever did the laundry before they were an item?
You know, sometimes I realize how far removed I am from a certain mindset. Before this stuff kicked up about the statue, I would have thought the cheesecake aspect of it was her underwear showing...

Seriously, I did not even think "oh hey if she was naked, she'd totally be providing easy access" (though with legs closed, I don't think it's THAT easy). It was more of "heh, MJ's really hot. Peter's so lucky." And I'm usually the one who gets accused of having sex on my mind a lot!
And besides her legs are cuh-razy long, I think.

I guess that's sort of the mindset these people rev themselves into. As mentioned in the linked article, this style of feminism basically classes all men as rapists waiting to happen. And thus bending over is an invitation to getting fucked.

Or maybe these chicks just really need to get laid.

You know, I commented to someone else about the skirt length thing the other night... it's ridiculous for a lot of reasons, really. I mean, if DC were the sort to do pantyshots, it would make more sense. But despite putting her in that ridiculously short shirt (never mind drawing her like an anorexic), they apparently feel that showing her panties would be just too much. So since the skirt's not short, it's floofy and constantly blowing upwards, there's all of three angles they can draw her from.

I mean, the scene that sort of highlighted the sheer ridiculousness of it was when she decided to "push on the Earth to see if she could change its orbit". She took the time to tuck the skirt between her legs and press her legs together to keep it from falling down... but apparently she has no problems with -flying around- with it flipping all over the place.

The skirt needs to go because it's ridiculous, not because it's sexist.

What's really weird is that there are a lot of superheroines who just wear the equivalent of a leotard/one-piece bathing suit anyway, so really all DC is doing is teasing people with the prospect of "panty shots" when there are heroines with "panty shots" as a matter of wardrobe. So I can ladle out "Shut UP!" to both sides in the argument (I'm looking at you, people with a fetish for scaly green man-panties and icons of the crotches of said scaly green man-panties).

holy cow, and I all this time I thought you may have just been trolling girl wonder and feminist fangirls in general (seriously!).
I mean, am I correct in thinking that basically GirlWonder is just a bunch of fangirls who want Batman to get all heartbroken and remorseful over Stephanie the way he used to over Jason Todd? Am I right? If so, that is...um. Huh.
It's kinda silly.

I don't troll, I just post in my little journal. Which makes it really weird when people claim I "outed" [info]sharpest_rose as a chan writer. She has about eight hundred friends. She outs herself far more effectively than I ever could every time she posts a story.

well, I won't get into that whole debate of who outed whom, but I will apologize if it seemed like I was accusing you of trolling. Bad choice of words :(

What I love is how the FWers, generally the exact sort of screechy herdthink people who would be joining up with Girl Wonder to protest this (check out the comment at the end of the original post for proof) are, of course, going "GET SOME DOLLAR BILLS!" for the Spidey pic. And also how the response to Mary-Jane, completely dressed but wearing a thong, is to draw Spidey completely UNdressed except for the thong.

apparently, exploitation of men is ok, I guess.

I mean on its own it's pretty funny and quite a witty comeback. When it's framed as the response of someone whose "inner feminist could not resist," and all the other FWers are all HURR HURR HURR MANBUTT or whatever, I kind of wonder what else could've been done (by femininsts, or fangirls, or a combination of both) with all the time spent on the issue. Perhaps, like the person teh_no links to, they could've actually been making their own stuff they'd like.

I travel in furry fandom at times. (Though less and less as time goes on.) And I'd still have to say you're right. Furries will flip the fuck out over miniscule things, but the feminist fangirls are outdoing them this time.

I would just like to point out that on S_D, I made a joke about an "erotic werewolf" comic, saying something along the lines of "You should always tell your partner you're a furry, sort of like informing them you have an STD." The response from the furry corner? "Oh, that's so bad :) XD!"

So at least furries can take a joke, even one that's directly mocking them.

Doesn't the fact that it has got so many people upset over variety of reasons, kinda make it not trivial?

Not really. People get upset over trivial shit all the time. The screechier and whinier the people, the more trivial the matter that can set them off.

Forgive me if I sound trollish.

girl-wonder.org is not about Batman crying over Stephanie. It is about getting DC to acknowledge her existence.

She showed up like twice after she died. Arrowette has had her existence more thoroughly covered-up and she's fucking alive.

girl-wonder.org is about an excuse to bitch.

Add away!

Overall, I'm against. Really, there's no reason Ma Kent is going to dress her niece (?) up like Paris Hilton and I can't believe Supergirl could go around almost flashing New Earth without some older hero saying "Kara, honey, I can buy you a longer skirt."
